Learning working maths

Why 'Working' Maths...

My objective is to help every student achieve their full potential, but more than that I consider it important that students recognise maths in the real world: Examples include understanding compound interest and the implications compared to simple interest; reading, interpreting and understanding charts; recognising that correlation is not the same as causation.

Using evidence based teaching methods, coupled with real world experience I deliver lessons that are tailored, engaging and effective.

Real world maths background

About Me...

I started in engineering, especially electronics, at a young age and still remain a technology geek to this day.  Having studied and worked in technology industries for 30 years I have an insight into the  use maths in the real world.

At school, maths did not come naturally to me, I was only able achieve an adequate level to go into engineering.  However, at university, the combination of an outstanding and inspirational maths lecturer and seeing maths put into a real world inspired my passion for maths.  Now, I want to do the same for others.

I bring a unique blend of experience to tutoring:

  • Over 10 years of teaching maths in UK secondary schools
  • 30 years in engineering and industry, working with both blue-chip companies and startups
  • Have worked with maths in cutting-edge technology projects
  • A Master’s degree in Communication, Information & Electronic Engineering

This mix allows me to explain abstract mathematical ideas in a clear, practical way — connecting textbook theory to real-world applications.

When will I ever use this?

This is a common question amongst students, especially when they have lack knowledge or experience to recognise each skill they learn makes the next, more advanced, skill possible.

It is true that some students may never require some of the maths they are learning, but maths promotes discipline, problem solving and logic skills and there is no escaping the importance of numeracy.  This is why it is required by so many employers.

On the other hand, for some students the skills they are learning are simply the tools they will need to access higher levels of maths - I have personally used, in real industrial applications, types of maths that most people have never even heard of but could not have done this if I had not first learned how to add and subtract.

Focus on the individual student

My Approach

Target the needs of each individual, not the average across the class.  Whether you are being held back in a class where you can dop more or struggling to keep up, I will create a structured plan to help you achieve the best result you can.

Every student is different. That’s why I:

  • Start by identifying learning gaps and goals
  • Tailor lessons to build confidence and mastery
  • Use a calm, structured approach with a strong focus on problem-solving and critical thinking
